Remarks by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco on Lai Ching-te's "transit" in San Francisco
2023-08-16 16:00

The Chinese side has repeatedly stated its stern position on Lai Ching-te’s ”transit” in the US. We firmly oppose any form of official interaction between the US and the Taiwan region, firmly oppose any visit by “Taiwan independence” separatists to the US in any name or under whatever pretext, and firmly oppose official contact of any form between the US government and the Taiwan region.

Lai Ching-te is an out-and-out “Taiwan independence” separatist who clings to the separatist position for “Taiwan independence”, openly describes himself as a "pragmatic worker for Taiwan independence”, attacks the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus. Lai is using “transit” as a pretext for activities in the US that are aimed at building momentum for his campaign for the Taiwan regional leader election and seeking US support for “Taiwan independence”. Driven by selfish purposes, he has gone so far as to betray the interests of the Chinese nation and the general public, and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits. As such, he is a troublemaker, indeed.

Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China’s complete reunification is the shared aspiration of the entire Chinese nation. “Taiwan independence” separatist activities are the biggest threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits. The Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco hopes that people from all walks of life in the consular district can fully understand the origin, nature and real status quo of the Taiwan question, and respect the desire and efforts of the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and realize complete national reunification. We wish to join hands with friends in the consular district who love peace and uphold justice to resolutely oppose any rhetoric and deed for “Taiwan independence”, safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, and uphold the common interests of the Chinese and American peoples.
