| More Leaders of Foreign Governments and International Organizations Express Their Condolence to China on the Earthquake Disaster in Sichuan (XIII) | ||
On May 13, 2008, more leaders of foreign governments and international organizations sent messages to Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, or in other ways, to express their deep condolence to the Chinese government and people over the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan. They expressed support for China's disaster relief efforts and believed that the Chinese government and people will surely win the battle against the disaster. Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Wangchuck conveyed deep condolences to the Chinese government and people, expressing the belief that China will certainly conquer the disaster and rebuild homeland. Bhutan's Prime Minister Jigmi Y. Thinley expressed his deepest sympathy to the victims' families. Singaporean President S. R. Nathan expressed deep sorrow over the huge casualties caused by the quake and spoke highly of the Chinese government's swift response to the disaster. He expressed belief that China will overcome the effects brought about by the earthquake and bring the situation in the quake-hit areas back to normal as soon as possible. Mongolian Prime Minister Sanj Bayar expressed sincere condolences to the people in the disaster-stricken areas. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak expressed sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims and wished the Chinese people safe and sound. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed the belief that under the strong leadership of the Chinese government, along with strength of purpose and all-out efforts, the Chinese people will conquer the crisis and bring their lives back to normal. President Denis Sassou-Nguesso and Foreign Minister Basile Ikouebe of the Republic of Congo conveyed their condolences over the earthquake disaster in Wenchuan, Sichuan. Lithuania's President Valdas Adamkus said in the face of the severe challenges posed by the earthquake disaster, the Lithuanian people will unite with the Chinese people and believe that the Chinese government and people will win the battle against the disaster with strong will and power. Croatian President Stjepan Mesic extended profound sympathy and condolences to the Chinese side, expressing belief that the Chinese people will surely properly handle the crisis with united efforts and conquer the disaster at the earliest date possible. Pope Benedict XVI also offered his condolences over the devastating earthquake in Sichuan and its neighboring areas, and wished the rescue work smooth progress. Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany and his predecessor Medgyessy Peter expressed deep condolences for the dead and sincere sympathy to the victims' families. Latvian Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis extended condolences to the Chinese side, offering support for disaster relief and reconstruction efforts. Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana expressed profound condolences to the Chinese government and the victims' families, adding that the EU is ready to offer assistance for disaster relief in China. On the same day, on behalf of their respective governments and relevant international organization, Cyprus Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, Mozambique Ambassador to China Antonio Inacio Junior and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Noeleen Heyzer also expressed sympathy to the Chinese government and people as well as condolences to the victims. |
