On May 14, 2008, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met with a U.S. delegation from the National Committee on American Foreign Policy headed by George Schwab. Dai hailed the development of Sino-U.S. relations since the two countries established diplomatic ties, and expressed the hope that two sides would make further efforts to enhance dialogue, communication and cooperation and properly handle differences to push bilateral ties for sound and steady development. Dai said the current cross-Straits relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan face an important opportunity to improve and develop due to the positive changes taking place in the area. "We'll cherish the opportunity and work to create a new situation of the peaceful development of the cross-Straits relations," he said. Dai hoped the United States will honor its commitments to adhere to the one-China policy and oppose to "Taiwan independence", and take concrete actions to support the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations. The delegation said it was willing to make efforts to promote bilateral relations between China and the U.S., and to enhance exchanges and cooperation in various fields.
