The Peking Opera
Sunday, April 26, 3 p.m.

With centuries of history, The Peking Opera has had plenty of time to evolve from the traditional to the extraordinary and downright fun. Don't miss their Marin Center debut and only Bay Area appearance when they bring their "action opera" to the stage. The Peking Opera is like no other form of theatre. Western opera performers do not tumble, cartwheel, juggle, back flip in carefully choreographed patterns over six foot walls, or catch, kick and back heel as many as 50 spears in a minute. For that matter, they do usually perform martial arts in Western operas. Combine all that with singing, dancing, crying and laughing as performers act out centuries old classics and new modern works and you begin to understand the drama and spectacle of The Peking Opera. Stories may come from old novels about heroes and lovers-many with amazing battle scenes full of leaping actors and whirling swords. Other stories feature spirit creatures, interfering parents, clowns, or the Monkey King. This long-standing performing tradition is highly stylized. Actors wear vibrant costumes and make-up, painted masks, pheasant plumes and imitation armor.
